The short answer

An Indian company can pursue a SOC 2 examination for a service it provides to customers anywhere in the world. Although people often search for “SOC 2 certification in India,” SOC 2 results in an independent CPA firm’s examination report, not a certificate. The report describes a defined system and controls; its usefulness depends on what the customer needs to assess.

Start with what your customer actually needs

A procurement request for “SOC 2” can mean different things. Before choosing an audit date or buying software, ask the customer:

  • Do you require a Type I report, a Type II report, or will you accept one as an interim step?
  • Which product, legal entity and services must the report cover?
  • What reporting period and delivery date will you accept?
  • Which trust services categories matter to your assessment, and can you review a report under a confidentiality agreement?

Type I addresses a point in time; Type II also addresses operating effectiveness over a period. Neither automatically replaces the other. Our Type I versus Type II comparison explains the distinction.

Scope the service, not just the office

Your system may include engineers in India, cloud infrastructure in another region, remote support staff and external service providers. Map the people, processes, technology and information used to deliver the service, and decide what is in scope with management and the examining CPA firm. The AICPA’s description criteria provide a basis for describing the service organization’s system.

AreaQuestion to resolveEvidence to prepare
People and accessWho can access production and customer data, including remote staff?Access approvals, periodic reviews and removal records.
Cloud and vendorsWhich providers support the service and what responsibilities remain yours?Vendor assessments, relevant provider reports and your own configuration records.
ChangesHow are production changes reviewed and deployed?Change requests, approvals, tests and deployment history.
Incident responseWho responds across time zones, and how are customers notified?Response procedures, exercises and records of relevant incidents.

A cloud provider’s SOC report does not automatically cover your organization’s responsibilities. Review the provider’s report and applicable customer responsibilities with your auditor. For a broader inventory, use our evidence checklist and worksheet.

A worked example: an Indian SaaS team selling to the US

Imagine a Bengaluru-based SaaS company whose US customer asks for a Type II report. The team confirms that the report must cover its subscription product and agrees a target period with the CPA firm. It maps production access, the deployment process, customer support, cloud providers and the people operating each control.

The readiness review finds that access reviews have been informal and change approvals are not consistently retained. Owners introduce a documented review process and retain approved changes. During the agreed period, the team performs the controls and preserves records; the independent CPA firm decides its examination procedures and issues the resulting report. This example illustrates the workflow, not a promise of an unqualified opinion or a particular timeline.

What does SOC 2 cost in India, and how long does it take?

There is no reliable universal price. The independent examination fee depends on the scope, report type, complexity and auditor; preparation may also involve staff time, remediation, tooling and outside assistance. Ask for separate estimates and clarify the currency, taxes, travel, follow-up and renewal assumptions. Use our SOC 2 cost guide to compare proposals.

Timing depends on your starting point and the auditor’s schedule. A Type II report includes an agreed period of control operation and additional time for examination and reporting. Work backwards from the buyer’s deadline using our timeline guide.

Is SOC 2 enough for India’s DPDP Act?

No single SOC 2 report establishes compliance with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act. SOC 2 and privacy law address different questions, although some security and governance work may overlap. Applicability and obligations depend on the facts and the phased commencement of the law. Read our DPDP business guide and take appropriate legal advice. A SOC 2 report also does not itself establish a particular data residency arrangement; verify contractual and legal requirements separately.

A practical starting plan

  1. Get the buyer’s report, scope and deadline requirements in writing.
  2. Map the product, locations, people and providers involved in delivering it.
  3. Identify control owners and assess gaps before committing to a reporting period.
  4. Engage an appropriately qualified independent CPA firm, confirm independence and agree scope, fees and timing.
  5. Run controls consistently, retain evidence and respond to the auditor’s requests.
